Single flame lighters for precise work
A single flame lighter is the most economical and the most accurate choice. Where three or four flames make a broad hot cone, one jet flame puts the heat on a point. That is exactly what you want with a candle, a cigar or a fuse.
That flame is blue, and that is not decoration but a clue: blue means the gas burns completely and the flame is therefore clean and hot.
Blue flame against yellow flame
A yellow flame draws its oxygen from the surrounding air and burns incompletely. That makes it cooler, gives off soot and blows away. A blue jet flame takes the air in inside the burner, burns clean and stays put in wind.
Precision
One flame is a point, not a cone. On a candle wick, the foot of a cigar or a fuse that is exactly what you want, because a broad flame heats everything around it as well.
Easy on gas
A model with four flames uses roughly four times as much per second. With one flame you therefore get many times further on the same tank.
Adjustable or fixed
A thumbwheel lets you take the heat back, which helps with fine work. Without adjustment you always get the same flame, and with a single jet flame that is usually no drawback.
Refill with butane gas at 45 PSI and wait a minute after filling. At lower pressure the flame starts to sputter and the valve clogs up.

Why is the flame blue and not yellow?
Because the gas burns completely. In a jet flame the air is already mixed in inside the burner, which makes the flame blue, hot and clean. A yellow flame burns incompletely and gives off soot.
When do you choose one flame instead of more?
For everything small and targeted: a candle, a cigar, a fuse, fine work. One flame is more accurate and uses far less gas.
Is one flame strong enough for charcoal?
It can be done, but it takes longer. Usually you light a firelighter cube or a wool starter with it first. If you want to light the coals directly, three or four flames do that noticeably faster.
Does a single jet flame blow out?
No. The number of flames says nothing about wind resistance; the type of flame decides that. A jet flame stays put in wind, even when there is only one.
What does an adjustable flame mean?
That a wheel lets you regulate the amount of gas and so make the flame shorter or longer. Handy for fine work, where a flame at its highest setting is too much.
How long does a tank last with one flame?
Noticeably longer than with several flames, because the consumption per second is a fraction. The exact duration depends on the tank size of the model.
